Study Says Lollipops Reduce Tooth Decay

Just a couple of days ago we informed you about a new study claiming that sugar-free lollipops containing licorice root extract reduce tooth decay causing bacteria.  Bacterias such as streptococcus mutans (or S. mutans,) which is considered to be the primary culprit in tooth decay.

We now have a bit more information to add, Martin Curzon, Editor in Chief, European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, said that "The use of the licorice root lollipops is an ideal approach as it will stop the transfer and implantation of the bacteria that cause dental decay from mothers to their infants and toddlers.  It also has the merit of being a low cost, high impact public dental health measure."

"This study is important not only for dental caries prevention research, but it also demonstrates the feasibility of a classroom protocol using a unique delivery system suitable for young children," said Jacqueline Tallman, R.D.H., B.S., M.P.A., principal investigator of the study.  "Early prevention is key for lifetime oral health and effective innovative protocols are needed."

Streptococcus mutans live in a plaque that adheres to the teeth, consume sugar and release acid that erodes tooth enamel, leading to the decay.  Brushing and flossing, accompanied with regular dental checkups, can help keep your smile bright and healthy.

  1. If you're like most parents, you might be worried that if your child doesn't have any baby teeth by nine months or a year, it means something is wrong. But when it comes to getting the first set of teeth, there is a wide normal range of variability. Although the average appearance of the first tooth is around six months of age, it could be much sooner or much later.

The general pattern of eruption is that the two middle upper and lower teeth (central incisors) come in first. They are followed by the teeth next to them, the lateral incisors. The cuspids (or canines) follow, then the first and second molars. By the time your child is 3 years old, he or she will have a full set of 20 primary teeth.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children be taken to see a pediatric dentist at least six months after they get their first tooth. It may seem strange to think about taking a child who is under one into a dentist's office' but doing so will help make sure his/her teeth stay healthy and get him/her used to visits that will become a regular part of his life.

  2. It's a good idea to put licorice extract and other ingredients that will not cause dental caries in lollipops and other sweet products. People who are prone to develop dental caries can now enjoy eating sweets. It can also be a very good idea to add xylitol to fight bacteria since it is known for its antibacterial effects.

  5. It's a bit surprising to know that lollipops reduce tooth decay. As far as I know, lollipops can cause tooth decay and other dental problems because of its sugar content.
