A lot of Pregnant Women Skip Dental Check-Ups?

A new study (of 35,267 women in 10 states) claims that some women, specifically black and Hispanic women, do not get dental care during their pregnancies.

Nearly 79% of the women in the study were white, 14% were black/non-Hispanic and 7% were Hispanic.  From more than 35,000 women taking part in the research, only 41% talked with a health care professional about the "need to take good care of their teeth and gums during pregnancy."  This study has shown the importance of oral health to a healthy, full-term pregnancy.

The results of the research are as follows:

"Compared with white women:

  • Black women were 20% more likely to have a dental problem during pregnancy.
  • Black and Hispanic women were less likely to get dental care while pregnant.
  • Black and Hispanic women were less likely to get their teeth cleaned before or during pregnancy.
  • Black and Hispanic women also were much less likely to get preventive care at any time.  About 4% of white women had never had their teeth cleaned, compared with 10% of black women and 21% of Hispanic women."

  1. It's sad to see this news because it's not good that they neglect their oral hygiene. My orthodontist in Lubbock tx says that they should continue to go to the dentist because they still need to give attention to their dental health.

My dentist in Huntersville NC will not be happy about this. It is important to maintain dental hygiene at all cost.
